Hi Steven,

That's okay - I'm glad you want to be fully informed about your hamsters :)

Usually, when people let their hamsters breed (by placing the female in the male's cage, or by placing them in a clean cage - but *never* place the male in the female's cage), they let them breed for about 10 minutes, or until the hamsters have lost interest.  Then you'll have to wait a few days to see if your hamster is pregnant (by looking for the signs I told you about in the last answer).  Most likely, the first sign that she is pregnant would be her building a large nest and hoarding food in it.  In addition, if you wait about 5 days, and your hamster doesn't come into heat, then you can be fairly certain she is pregnant.

Also, timing is very important; if your female is not in heat, then mating will not be successful.  A female will come into heat every 4 days - you can test her by stroking her back.  If she freezes up and her tail sticks straight up, then she is in heat.  She may also emit a musky odor.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask :)

Hi Steven,

When a hamster is in heat, that means that she is ready to mate.  If she is not in heat, and you try to mate her, then she'll just want to fight with the male hamster.  You can check to see if she is in heat anytime, since all you do is stroke her back.  If you stroke her back and she freezes up, then you know she is in heat.  If you stroke her back and she doesn't freeze, then you're basically just petting her - so there's no harm.

Hi Steven,

When your female hamster attacked your male hamster, that means she wasn't in heat.  When a female hamster isn't in heat, and she is placed in a male's cage, she'll just attack him.  That's why it's important to only try to mate your hamsters when the female is in heat.

When your female hamster's tail was sticking up, that most likely means that she was in heat.  You'll have to wait about 5 days to see if she is pregnant or not.

Have a great weekend!

Hi Steven,

I'll answer your questions in order:

1. There is a possibility she may be pregnant, but like I said, you'll have to wait about 5 days to see if she comes in heat again.  If she comes in heat, she's not pregnant.
2. They should *not* be in the same cage.  This is dangerous for the hamsters, because they WILL fight.  And, when Syrians fight, they fight violently, often resulting in the death of one of the hamsters.  So you should separate them into different cages as soon as possible.  If you want to mate them, wait until she is in heat, then place her in the male's cage for about 10 minutes, or until the hamsters have lost interest in mating.
3. She can still get pregnant from your male hamster.  It may take a few mating attempts, though.
4. There is a lot you need to know about baby hamsters, so I'll send you a link to a website:
http://www.petwebsite.com/syrianrearing.htm
5. Even if your female is pregnant, you likely won't notice a big change in her behavior, so yes, she can be hyper and energetic.
6. Refer to my answer to your #2 question.

Now, before you start mating them seriously, you need to know that every baby hamster will need his/her own cage once they are 6 weeks old.  So unless you have enough cages, or unless you're sure you have new owners for them, I wouldn't advise that you mate your hamsters.  It can be very expensive, especially considering they are Syrians and need their own cages.

Answer
Hi Steven,

If, after 4-5 days, your hamster comes into heat, then you know she's not pregnant.  Once you've determine that she is in heat, then you can place her in the male's cage and let them mate for about 10 minutes, or until they've lost interest.  *Never* put the male in the female's cage - female hamsters are very territorial, and she will beat him up.

Nipples on a female hamster are located on her belly and are faintly visible beneath the fur.

Here's a link to some illustrations so you can be absolutely positive what sex your hamsters are:
