hamster & earring

Question
i was letting my hamster walk around my desk (supervised) & she picked up my moderately large metal earring.  She started chewing it & then proceeded to shove the whole thing in her mouth.  I think its too big for her to swallow, but it has a hook & im nervous about it hurting her.  Is there a way i can get her to open her mouth so i can retrieve the earring?

Answer
Hi Katie, i really wouldnt recommend trying to look in a hamsters mouth without thick gloves and a desire to lose fingers! probably by now she has spat it out into her bed or toilet or other food store area so have a root around in her cage and see if you can find it. if you cant find it it may be that it is stuck in her pouch, have a feel through the skin gently all the way down her sides to her back legs and feel for the shape of it, if you can feel it dont try to dislodge it as it may be stuck by the hook you describe, try giving her some food, something soft like scrambled egg that she should take back to her bed to store, this may spur her on to take the earring out too. failing this she may need a trip to the vet for sedation whilst it is removed. let me know how you get on, Jen
