Moving a hamster

Question
Hi Karen,

I am moving across the country (approx 2100 miles) and we need to of course bring my daughters syrian dwarf hamster.  Can we move him in our car?  What about an airplane?  If you have any suggestions, I would certainly appreciate it.

Thank you very much,
Connie

Answer
Hi Connie,

Hamsters do better on short trips. The furthest I have traveled with my hamsters is about 180 miles and they did very well. I can suggest that if you decide to take your hamster in the car, take out anything that can move around and hurt your hamster. Give the hamster a cucumber or similar wet food before the journey. Take out the water bottle, since they tend to drip too much. Make sure the cage is secure. Keep the windows closed so it doesn't get too drafty. Don't leave your hamster in the car for very long or in the sun, this could cause your little pet to over heat or even death.

If you decide to fly, You will have to talk to the airline you chose and see if they will allow your hamster to fly. Some airlines require you to put the hamster in the cargo hold, which i would not suggest. Some airlines may allow hamsters in the passenger cabin. The cage counts as carry-on luggage and must meet with carry-on size limitations. Hamsters must be at least 8 weeks old at the time of travel and must have a veterinary statement of good health within 30 days of travel. There may also be some fees.

Thank you for your question! Hope this helps and best of luck to you!
