Fancy Dwarf Hampster Eye Problem

Question
Hi Brian,

I have a dwarf hampster now for 3 months, from the beginning I noticed that her right eye seem a bit smaller and off color compare to the left eye. Recently it seems that the problem is worse because her eye looks like it's full of yellow stuff inside, and I mean inside the actual eye. Her eyes are red and this eye is like sunken in into the socket and she always keeps it half shut especially when she wakes up. I'm no vet, but it looks like when a human has really bad cataracts. Do you have any helpful input on this?

Thanks!   Gerry

Answer
Hey, Gerry.

It sounds as if your hamster's eye is infected.  It could also be cataracts or another eye disease, like you suggested.  The only thing you could really do about this would be to have a vet look at it.  He or she would determine if there's anything that can be done about it.  If there is, your hamster would get the proper treatment... and if there isn't, just remember that hamsters don't rely on their vision that much.  They can only see about 6 inches in front of them, so they can get along pretty well without it.. their hearing and smell are much more important.
Hope that helps out, and if you need any more info on anything, feel free to ask.  Good luck with your hamster, and best wishes to both of you.
