Question

Scoots fed his first s
We have just added a male Fancy Dwarf as a member to our growing family. We have had him a few days and have fell absolutely in love with the little guy. However, I do have a few questions regarding some minimal concerns. Since we've had him, people have come by and pictures have been taken, but he never seems to get startled, unless awoken from sleep. Even extremely loud noises (accidental of course) don't phase him so I am curious if loss of hearing is prevalent at all in dwarf hamsters or if they just don't startle easily.  Also, I noticed today that his one eye seemed watery and slightly closed while in his cage.  He was scratching it and I believe even made his eyelid bleed a little. He seemed to be fine after we held him for a while but after he was back in the cage, he went back to squinting it. I'm using the Carefresh brand bedding which I was told was some of the best so I'm wondering if maybe he just got irritated and will get better or if something is wrong and I should visit a vet. I attached a picture where you can slightly see the wateriness and slight red tint at the base of his eye.  Thank you so much!

Answer
Dear Dave,
Normally hamster's hearing is better than their eye sight but sometimes a hamster can be hard of hearing just as any other animal. I wouldn't worry too much about this though some hamsters just don't startle easily as others startle very easily. Perhaps your hamster is just very docile, it all depends on the hamster itself. The eye could be just a case of sticky eye. To cure this take a damp cloth and with warm water gently flush and wipe out the eye. Do this once a night and day and it should clear up in a few days. Be sure to watch and make sure it is not a sign of wet tail though, so keep a close eye on his food and water intake and other behaviors. If the eye does not clear up with in a few days and/or other behaviors are changing then I would talk to a vet.

Good luck,
Lorelei
