Question
Dear Kelly,
I just bought a Teddy Bear Hamster from Earl May. They can tell the gender at Earl May, but put them all in together. The people at Earl May told us that the Teddy Bear hamster we just bought has givin birth before. Not to long ago. I was woundering if she might be pregnant. Here are her symptomes. She is kinda fat a little bit past her stomach. She was very sweet, but now she's starting to get mean. She will let me pet her in her cage and will try biting if I pick her up, but after I pick her up, she's sweet again. She's hanging around her water bottle and wont run very much. I have alot of dwarf hamsters, because I used to breed dwafs, but do you think that my Teddy bear hamster might be pregnant, do you know how long until she gives birth, and do you know a website I could cheak out about prgnant Teddy Bear Hamsters? P.S Now I have a question about my gerbils. I have just bought two gerbils named Midnight and Rusty. Every day they look like there having a seizure. It looks like there hopping but there not. Do you know if this is normal for gerbils? P.S there both males and we have called places and asked them, but nobody knows.

Answer
Hi Sammy,

Here's a great website to get all the information you'll need about pregnant hamsters:

http://www.petwebsite.com/syriangestation.htm

(Also, check out the other links at the top of the page that cover all of the other aspects on pregnancy.)

There's really not anything else to add to that, because the website covers everything.

As for your gerbils - Gerbils are very hyperactive creatures.  First, make sure they're completely comfortable.  They need to have ample space (at the absolute minimum, a 10-gallon tank - they'll just chew plastic cages up).  Also, they need plenty of things to chew on every day, such as chew sticks, toilet paper rolls, and cardboard egg cartons.  Finally, they need toys to keep them occupied and happy.  If you already have all of these elements, then it's likely your gerbils are simply "acting like gerbils."  They love to play, and they especially love to jump around.  It doesn't sound like you have anything to worry about (as long as they can't jump out of their cage!).

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

Kelly
