Question
I got my female hamster less than 2 weeks ago when she was 4 weeks old. So if the pet store I got her from was selling the truth I take it she is 5-6 weeks old. Now my question is.. a couple days after (especially during this second week I have had her) she was been lying FLAT on her stomach several times a day looking as if she is sick and dying. But then I see her running in her wheel. She doesn't seem to have any indications that she is sick other than her lying flat on her stomach and looking like she is going to die. But after that for a while she seems fine. I have a picture and a video if you would like to see. She also has quick shallow breathing in intervals while she is lying flat. Is she sick? Is she pregnant? Please help!

Answer
Hi Chris

I think you need to get her to a vet.  If a hamster exercises then collapses, this can indicate a heart problem.  Also, her breathing is a cause for concern.  There is a condition that hamsters get that can be very serious - fungus can collect in damp corners, urine, soiled/moldy food etc.  If the spores are released into the air and the hamster breathes them in they make them very ill and affect their breathing.  In order to breathe properly the hamster often has to lie down on their side.  If she has this, then your vet needs to see her urgently and get her on antibiotics.

In the meantime, give her cage a good clean out with pet disinfectant and dry thoroughly before you put any new bedding/wood chippings back in.  Make sure the cage is in a dry location where the temperature is constant.  Remove any uneaten fresh food every day so it doesn't go moldy.  As you've only had her for a short time it could be that she has some genetic problem, or that she picked something up while she was in the pet shop.  I would be tempted to remove her wheel temporarily and see if she still has moments of collapse.  If she has a heart condition, you might have to remove the wheel completely but this is something your vet can advise you on.

Please let me know how you get on.
