Answer
Hi Angie

I'm really sorry to hear about your hamster.

You told me that your hamster had an eye problem and was squealing and to me this was obvious that he needed expert veterinary attention as it sounded as though he was in pain/lot of discomfort, which is why I suggested you had him checked out.  Did the vet give you a diagnosis of what was wrong?  What medicine did he give him?  I can't imagine that your vet would give him anything that would kill him.  It is more likely that the eye problem was just one symptom of a more serious condition.

The description you gave of him previously sounded as though he was in pain, and therefore as a pet owner you have the responsibility to get veterinary advice in cases such as this, so that the pet doesn't suffer.

I'm really sorry this ended the way it has - it is always incredibly sad when a pet dies, especially when it is sudden, but my role as an 'expert' on this site is purely to offer advice or suggestions.  I do not profess to be trained in animal medicine, and in fact state that I am not a qualified vet in my profile, nor do I possess psychic skills whereby I can know for sure what is wrong with a hamster that I have never seen.  I have to base my answers purely on the information I am given and I therefore often recommend that the person asking the question gets veterinary advice.  My expertise is based on over 12 years of keeping hamsters, mostly for a rescue, and during this time hundreds have come through my doors - many of which have presented illnesses.  In nearly every case I recommend veterinary intervention when a hamster is ill as it is only when someone can physically see what is wrong that you can make a firm diagnosis and get the correct treatment.  I therefore do not appreciate being blamed for the death of a pet when all I have done is suggest you get a qualified person to examine them.

I know that right now you are angry and upset at the death of your pet, but I still believe it was important for your vet to check him out. Had you not taken him he may still have died, albeit a few days later and in pain.
