Question
how do i know when my hamster's (syrian) teeth are too long
thanx!

Answer
Hi Gabby

Hamster teeth are naturally very long (or at least the bottom ones are).  The problem with these teeth is that sometimes they break and the others grow lopsided.  In these cases it is a case of trimming them down to avoid getting overgrown.

The attached link has a picture of a hamster with normal length teeth.  If they get any longer than this they need to be trimmed. http://www.petwebsite.com/hamsters/hamster_teeth_problems.htm

Trimming teeth can be quite difficult as you have to be quick and careful not to over-trim them and make them too short, or accidentally catch their tongue/cheek.  If you are in any doubt I advise that you either ask your local pet shop or rescue center if they can have a look at your hamster, or take him to the vet.  They can show you how to hold your  hamster as you trim the teeth.

Generally speaking, I have found it quite rare to have to trim teeth.  Most times they are fine.  It is only really in old age, illness or (as previously mentioned) if a tooth breaks that I've needed to trim the teeth. It is important that the hamster has something to grind their teeth on - some hamsters tend to chew the bars of their cage, others need toys etc. to allow them to do this.  Also, make sure there is something hard in their food mix - if not, you can always put in a dog biscuit.

Hope you get on OK.
