Overly itchy ferret?

Question
Hi Ailigh

I have a five year old male ferret.  I realise that ferrets are prone to itching, but when does this become a problem or an indication that something is wrong?  His health seems good although I'm keeping an eye on his abdomen at the moment as it is rather large, but the scratching that he does seems rather constant, interrupting play with my other ferret etc.  She doesn't scratch like this at all.  There's no sign of anything on his skin and he hasn't lost any fur.  I seem to recall this happening last year too but can't remember when.  Wondering if the seasonal change or central heating coming on could be affecting him?  I haven't changed anything in his cage or washing powder.  Do you think I should I take him to the vet for a check up?  I guess I'm asking how much it needs to affect his behaviour before I do?  I don't want him uncomfortable but don't want to bother the vet if it's normal.  Advice much appreciated.

Thanks very much.

Matilda

Answer
They can itch seasonally (dry air in the winter), but I would never worry about bothering your vet as it could be something easily treatable (fleas) or it could be something related to the large belly.  Always better safe than sorry since I am not a vet and make the call to your vet for their opinion.
