QuestionI have 2 dogs. A male Boston Terrier and a female Boston terrier/ Beagle mix. I recently made an appointment to have my male neutered. However, my female is in heat and while I tried to keep them apart, I wasn't successful. While I'm sure they would make cute puppies, there is no way I can handle all the responsibilities of puppies(which was why I was going to have my male neutered). It shouldn't matter to the vet which dog I bring into be fixed. Would it be ok if I took my female in to be spayed instead of my male? They first got together Monday Feb. 9th and the appointment is for Monday Feb. 16th. So it's only a week apart from the day they got together.
AnswerHi Christina. It will be best to consult with your vet before taking your female dog that is i heat to be spayed. Most vets prefer to wait up to 4 months after the heat cycle has ended to preform a spay due to complications associated with swelling of the uterus.
When you talk to your vet, be sure to ask about the added cost to spay a female that is in heat. Most vets, that are willing to spay a dog that is in heat, will charge more.
Good luck, and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have additional questions.
