Question
my poodle does not do well away from home. for the purpose of breeding her it was recommended to me by a trainer to inseminate her artificially at home.  how do i go about this?

Answer
Hi Arlene

My first question would be, and please don't take this personal or an attack on your female, is does she have a temperament issue? And if so, do you want to pass that trait on to any off-spring.

A.I. is easy to do, most vets will do it but it can be done easily and quickly in your home.

You need rubber gloves, ziplock baggies, polypropylene catheter and some syringes.

The female is brought to the male and as the male mounts and starts to come out, you gently grab his penis behind the balls.  Gently pull the skin back and ease the baggy over his entire member. It's a good idea to roll the bag down over the zip part so not to damage the male.  DO NOT grab, pull, jerk or pump him. You can take the female away at this point.

Remember you are just holding the bag and skin in place. Now he won't shoot out of the gate like you may think, but in fact, he will just sort of drip out.  It could take 5 minutes or 15.  You want the sperm to be creamy and white.

When he's done, you can zip the bag up and put the male away.  Fill the syringes up with sperm.  Gently insert the catheter into the female. The catheters can be cut to accommodate the female but you want to ensure that the edges are rounded so not to cut the female.

Gently empty the syringes into catheter. It may help to have the female on your lap with her feet on the floor.

It's recommended to leave the female in a crate for a few hours to give the sperm a swimming chance.  You do not want her to eliminate them out by urinating.

It really is a simple and effective process.  To date, we have a 100 percent success rate.

Good luck
