Question
Hello, I was going to get my lab spayed on the 8th unforunitly she came into heat on the 1st, (I am the person with the jack russle male who is not fixed), she has been eight days of red discharge, she has taken to curling her tail to one side and laying down for my russle to mount her, now I think hes got her a few times but either way I am getting her spayed I do not want puppies, my question is: how much longer do I have to wait to get her spayed? should I make the apointment now? can she be spayed while in heat? if not why? please give me some advice as soon as possible, thank you for your help in advance.

Answer
Hi, unfortunately it is very dangerous to get them spayed while they are in heat or pregnant.  That's why the vets charge more for them to be spayed at that time.  You can get an injection to bascially have the pregnancy not take, but you can only get the injection if the first time the dogs got together was within the last three days.  If it hasn't been within that time, then you can't get the injection.  The injection is not the safest thing either.  Either way, the alternatives are not that safe for the dog.  At this point I would keep them apart and hope for the best.  Of all the choices though, I would personally get the injection if it was still possible.  Hope this helps, and good luck.
