Introducing Chow puppy to Chow senior

Question
I have had my Chow for nearly 12 years now, she is female and she has always been the only animal in the home. I really wanted to adopt another dog and finally came to the conclusion that I wanted to adopt another Chow, primarily because I enjoy the breed.  A Chow Rescue organization matched me up with a 10 month old Chow.  We did the general introductions in a "neutral" location and now they are living in the same home, but with A LOT of problems.  My older Chow is dominant and she will attempt to bite him for taking her toys or coming near us.  We've decided to have the Chow puppy sleep in a different room at night because our senior Chow is extremely protective over our bedroom, more so than any other room in the house.  I guess I wanted some tips on trying to get my senior Chow to accept the newer dog.  The puppy also tends to tease the senior dog by stealing toys to attempt to engage the senior dog in playing but the senior dog will have no part in it.  I accept responsibility for the senior Chow not being socialized enough with other dogs from a young age.  Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Charity;
That's a hard one, since she is that old and used to being the only child. LOl
She has established herself as the aloha in the family. It should be you or your husband,
Sounds like she is jealous of the new little interloper.
Chew her out good when she mistreats the puppy.
Your situation is much like a family that has a child, and it is the only one for a long time, and they bring home a new baby, and the older one is jealous.
Put her time out.
When she goes after the puppy, put her in a small room ( after you have chewed her olitle butt out good), and close the door. It should be a small room she would not want to be shut up in.
The time out rule in our house is the hall bathroom, that is only 5ft.x5 ft.of floor space between the bathtub and the vanity, and they can't do anything put lie on the bath mat and hear all that is going on they are missing out on.
Make sure you really chew her out, tell her that is NOT allowed, and put her in the place you choose for time out.
Mine caught on to that real fast, and they would rether be beaten with a club than to have to do 30 minutes of time out.
When they get nasty with each other, the one that started it gets put into time out. All I have to do is say "MAX!, do you want to go to time out?" and he straightens up like a little gentleman. Can you guess which one of mine misbahaves> LOL
Youdog is pretty old to have to deal with a brat puppy that has all that energy and deliberately teases.
Call the rescue group ou got them from. They are more familiar with the chow opersonality than I am, and I am sure they have had experience with handling this problem, and they can better tell you what you can do to handle this.
She's been the boss for a long time, and she just may not like another puppy getting loving and pets from another dog, so she is going to chase it off.
It is not an easy problem to solve since she has been head honcho for so long, but it CAN be done.
Good luck.
