Question
hey i have a male and a female pug.  my male is 3, i just got my female a year ago and she just came into heat a few weeks ago.  i tryed to watch and make sure they breed but the male could not hit the  target so to speak.  i never seen them mate but i was maybe not in the same room at the time.  my question is:  it has been to weeks since she was in heat, and her nipples have grown alot larger, is this a for sure sign she may be pregnut, or is this just simply happen after her first heat cycle?

Answer
Hi Lori,  It is possible she is pregnant, or she could be in what we call a false pregnancy, which is when their body tells them they are pregnant when in actuality they are not.  In fact, they can get a lot of the symptoms, including even producing milk and in some dogs, they can even go through false labor.  You have to be careful if a dog goes too far into it as they can get mastitis from producing milk and the milk stays in them which causes an infection.  If she is pregnant (or even in a false pregnancy), she will start to produce milk about 7-10 days before she is due.  Count 63 days from when you know she was interested in the boy, and that will give you an estimate date as to when she is due.  Prepare as if she is pregnant so you can be ready.  Hope this helps,
