Question
I have a 7month old  pappilon.  I've had him for just a week.  I never trained a dog before.  He was trained with kitty litter before I got him.  I've been trying to train him togo outside.  he is already crate trained.  The first few days I had him he had diarhea was going all the time. I was taking him out almost every hour and he was going.  I praised him and gave him a treat.  As his stomach got better he wasn't going as often and if I took him out and he didn't go I put him back in the crate.  I felt bad because he was in the crate for long periods of time and I realzed what I've been reading about is really for a new puppy who can't hold it as long.  So I just confine him to the kitchen.  When he has a good day and has been going when I take him out I give him more freedom.  however he still has accidents.  When he does there is no warning.  He doesn't bark.  He doesn't run to the door.  Nothing.  He's always sniffing so I can't tell if he's sniffing out a spot.  What am I doing wrong?  how long will it take until he can tell me he has to go?  Also, the past few days he's become alittle more agressive.  When he has some freedom in the house he starts running laps around the couch and nips at us.  Is this normal?  Thanks for any help you can give.

Answer
Hi, first off you need to go back to the crate.  All dogs no matter what their age need to start off in a crate as you are using their natural instinct to keep their den area clean to train them.   Whenever you are not able to keep an eye on him, put him in the crate.  basically you are trying to teach him control and this is the best way to start.  Keep the dog in a small area at first when you do allow freedom in the house and then open up more areas as you find the dog holding it in the smaller areas.  Also, keep the dog on a strict schedule of going outside so you can prevent the accidents before they happen.  Always get him outside within 15-20 minutes after eating so he will go, and then at his age he should be able to easily hold it 4-6 hours without a problem.
As far as running around and nipping, very common in Papillions.  They can be very hyper.  Hope this helps, and be patient with the potty training, it can take a couple of months at least to completely potty train a small dog.
