Beagle bath & dry skin

Question
Hi! I recently adopted a senior beagle and I don't know much about her history. My vet suggests fortnightly baths for my beagle as she says that beagles don't have sweat glands in their bodies. I am currently using a medicated shampoo to treat dandruff relief, dermatitis, itching and dry skin on my beagle. However, after the 2nd bath recently, her skin seems to have shown dry flakes especially on one particular spot near the base of her tail. I didn't notice any of this after I gave her the 1st bath since she came to our home. I am thinking of changing shampoo and maybe use a conditioner as well in the future. Appreciate your susggestions/recommendations on what brands/type should I buy. Thanks very much!

Answer
First off, I would make sure your beagle is eating a high quality diet. That has the largest effect on the skin. Make sure the first ingredient in her food is a meat or meat by product. Lamb usually works well for dogs with skin problems. If you bathe her, the number one thing is to rinse really really well. Any shampoo left on the skin will dry it out farther. A medicated, or an oatmeal shampoo should work well. Conditioner would be a good idea too. Good luck to you. (by the way, all dogs, not just beagles, do not sweat through their skin...thats why all dogs pant!)
