Kidney problem

Question
HI Sarah,

I volunteer for the Sun Coast Basset Rescue in Central Florida.  We have a basset puppy that we are fostering.  Here is his problem.

He is drinking a LOT.  Also his urine is clear with a Specific Gravity of 1010. (Taken on 8/8/06. This the highest it has been since 7/13 when it was 1000...basically water.

Also his BUN is at 67 and his Crea is 2.3 and his PHOS as jumped up and down from a high of 10.5 to a low of 5.2 and now is at 10.0.

He is a very active and otherwise healthy puppy.

We have to have permission from the rescue before we can take him to the vet.  It looks like the pet store where he was at was taking good care of him.  He came with a perscription for Baytril and Benazepril.  The rescue has been slow to getting us any answers as what to do for him next.  So what are your thoughts about what may wrong with him and what to do next?

I have 4 urine/blood test results on him but I don't know what a lot of the abreviations are for.  The ones I gave you I know and they are the only ones out of the normal range.

Thanks for any imput you may have.  I need some ammo from you so I use on the health coordinator for the rescue.  Just incase she tries to B.S. her way out of getting this dog treated.

Thanks for your time,

Greg Merritt

Answer
There is a very high chance that this dog either has chronic kidney failure or some form of diabetes or other hormonal disorder. Given his blood test results I would guess an endocrine problem, possibly deficiency of ADH which would cause diabetes insipidus and electrolyte disturbances.  In either case he needs immediate diagnosis and to start treatment right away in order to give him the best possible long term prognosis.
Hope this gives you what you need.
