Natural Antibiotic

Question
My Labradoodle seems to have a problem w/ his prostate. Evidently it is swollen most of the time, probably due to some sort of infection, causing him to have problems urinating. My vet put him on antibiotics at one time, which worked beautifully. He said that if the problem were to come back, we should have him neutured. We plan on doing that, but my husband would like to try to get the dog to have some pups. Also, we have to work out the financial aspect. In the meantime, I was wondering if there may be some natural antibiotic for dogs, something that I could find at maybe a health food store, in order to relieve any discomfort he may have.

Answer
I'm afraid the only cure for prostate problems is to have the dog neutered.  Antibiotics will not work for very long and there are no non-prescription drugs with similar properties.  Prostate enlargement is partly genetic, partly age-related and partly to do with testosterone levels.  In a dog still young enough to be considering breeding from this indicates a hormonal problem.
I would also very strongly advise against breeding a dog with an enlarged prostate as
1) this can be a hereditary condition
2) it can make the condition worse
3) its unethical to breed cross bred dogs anyway - there are 1.5 million put down in shelters across the country every year that are perfectly healthy all because of irrepsonsible overbreeding of these "designer" dogs (and others).  The ONLY ethically acceptable reason to breed a dog is if they are champions in the show ring and/or trial arena and will improve their specific breed.  The breeding of these "designer" dogs is an abomination.  They are not guaranteed to be hypoallergenic and therefore there is absolutely no legimate reason to breed them at all.
Hope this helps
