Question
whenever we have company, our 11 mth old large yorkie, gets overly excited. after about 10 minutes, he calms down, but at first, wants to be all over them.
he just loves people, especially children and other dogs.
any suggestions for keeping him calmer around company?
he did go to obedience class, and did very well, but this was not addressed.
he is neutered.
thanks
Sandy

Answer
This is a tough, but not insoluble problem.  Needing cooperation of your visitors makes it tougher.  If you can, have one of you hold him on a leash while the other answers the door.  If you can't do that, secure him to a tie down, a short chain with a snap.  Allow your visitors to approach him, but insist he sits quietly before they give him any attention.  The visitors may be harder to control than him.  It may help to start by asking somebody to come by just for the purpose.  He wants petted?  Then not until he sits and stays.

It can be done.  Along with about 6 other families, we took our 6 month old Holly to a children's museum yesterday.  One of the other puppies was less than 3 months old.  At that stage of a to be a service dog's life, we can allow people to pet them.  They do need to remain calm.  it was an important day of training for them.

Thank you for neutering your dog, and thank you for pointing it out.  It is a very important part of controlling behavior, but is not a cure all.  I am also glad you took him seriously and did obedience training.  Failing to do so is one of the biggest mistakes small dog owners make.  Many small dogs take themselves very seriously, and run roughshod over owners that don't.
