Lab face injury

Question
Hello Patti,
I have a 2 1/2 year old black lab mix and she was wrestling around with a 3 month old lab and got a little cut on her face. I was putting neosporian on it and had a cone on her head, but that didn't seem to work very well. So my husband started spraying some dog anibodic spray. The cone broke (i guess I can't play fetch with a dog with a cone on her head)
Anyway last night when I got home the scar/scab is very ugly and yellow. I usually keep her in her outside keenel when we are at work so she can have fresh air, but today I kept her in her inside kennel. Any ideas on how I can fix this? I have some pics I could email you laster today if you wanted to see.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Answer
Hi Jessica,

Usually those cones, or "Elizabethan Collars", as they're known are used to prevent a dog from chewing or licking at an injury on a leg or other part of it's body. If your dog has a cut on her face,  she probably can't reach it to "pick at it" as she would if the cut were on her foot. You probably don't need to use it on your dog.

Older wounds with a covering of pus and scab should be cleansed daily with 3% hydrogen peroxide solution or a surgical soap. Blot dry. Apply antibiotic ointment (Neosporin is fine).

If it looks like the cut is becoming infected despite your efforts, you'll need to have your dog examined by your vet.

Best of luck,
Patti
