neutered male tied with intact female

Question
Hi, Karen.  I have a 4 year old male mini schnauzer that has  been neutered for a little over a year (he was neutered right before I adopted him).  I recently rescued a 1 1/2 year old female mini schnauzer that is still intact.
This morning I found them "tied".
I realize the scent of a female in heat is extremely strong, but I thought it odd that he was Interested.  I assume that the removal of the testes would eliminate the desire.
Have you ever seen or heard of this?
I was fortunate that both were calm, they had about a 10 minute tie (seemed like an eternity!), and were fine afterward.
She will be carted off to the vet to be spayed in a few weeks...
Thanks!

Answer
This is very common. Most neutered males *will* ignore in-season bitches.... unless they get right under their nose... and bitches can be such teases. What's a guy to do?<G>

In some instances, if the neutering was fairly recent, the dog can still get the bitch pregnant due to still-viable sperm swimming around in the dog. It is always important to keep in-season bitches separated from all males, intact or otherwise, to avoid potential problems. When a person has dogs of both sexes and wonders which one to neuter, the choice should *always* be the bitch first.

Nothing like getting bounced out of bed at 6:30 AM on a cold, snowy morning by a close friend whose neutered male and intact bitch were tied outside in the snow when she needed to be getting ready for work!<GGGGG> You were lucky your tie was so short; they are often much longer than that<G>
