Question
Hi,
I have 2 labs a Black male (Keegan) how is 3 years old and a Yellow male lab (Rile) who is 10 months. Now Keegan looks bloated, at first fat (You could grab a slab of it) but now bigger you cant grab any fat he's just round. His diet consists of purina one adult food and my mom insists on feeding both of them a wal-mart brand dog chew every night.  Now, I have read some stuff that says chews may cause bloating and fat possible in my case? Also, Is it healthy for a Keegan and Rile to have one chew a night? (the chews ar roughly 3.5",2" inches)..Keegan weights about 90lb...Please help

Answer
Hello Reece and thank you for your questions,

Well cheaper foods that contain alot of by products/corn/wheat can Also cause bloat, I ahve never has bloat related problems with any of my dogs due to rawhide chews. I give rawhide stick(5 inch long 1/4 inch round ones or the little chip ones your talking about) about once or twice a week, The packages state one daily is reccomended but I think two a week keeps there teeth clean and healthy...why try make them fat?. Try changing to a non by product higher end food for both dogs but be sure to keep Rile on large breed puppy in the other brand you choose. Technical is used by breeders its not as expensive as say Nutreance or Nutro and is good quaility and is now avalible in natural formula if I can remember correctly. I Personally use Authority from petsmart for my dogs...the adult Lite formula(chicken), I have decided to mix normal (chicken) adult Authoirty with my two smaller dogs food they are not overweight. This food is avalible only Through petsmart stores if you have a store like this near you great! This food is high quaility and avalible in large breed formulas. Be sure to get Keegan on a Large breed adult formula as well. Large breed dog foods are formulated with speacial ingredients for healthy long lasting bones/joints. You could also try some dog pill/liquids avlailbe from pet shops of gas this might help the bloat problem. I hope this helps if you need any more information please feel free to ask.
