Question
I have a 6 month old female mini schnauzer. She is quite small and weighs 9 pounds. She is very active and great fun with no apparent health problems. I feed her a mix of wet and dry food. For the last 5 nights she has cried to go out in the middle of the night to poop which is quite loose. She also poops twice in the day. She appears to be healthy and happy. I haven't changed the food, but just wonder why she needs to go toilet in the night when nothing has changed.
Just returned from a vet visit and was told to leave it 4 more days to see how she goes and to feed her chicken and rice. The vet thinks it might be caused due to her teething. Thanks

Answer
It could be that she is getting too much to eat; you might try cutting back on her food a bit. Also, take a stool sample in and have it tested for parasites; she may have picked something up since the last time she was tested.

Personally, I have never had a dog get loose stools from teething, but anything is possible, I guess. She should be getting done with teething at her age.

Also, it is possible that something in her diet is not agreeing with her. Dog food companies will often change their formulas yet want to use up their old (printed) food bags, so the diet change may not be listed on the bag of food for awhile. Make sure that you are feeding a quality food, such as Eagle, Canidae, Wellness, Solid Gold, or Flint River Ranch. The first ingredient should be a meat protein (preferably a meat meal), there should be a minimum of grains, and there should be NO by-products in the food.
