Question
I have a 1 yr old Maltese. My vet says I need to get her fixed- because with every cycle - she is higher on the risk list of getting breast cancer. She has had two cycles already. I have her scheduled for surgery in the morning- but I am terrified for her to go in for surgery. Is it true that Maltese can get breast cancer if you dont have them fixed?

Answer
Any dog can get breast cancer, not having your dog spayed increases her risks of many kinds of cancer including mammary gland. I'm sure your vet is very competent and while there is a risk that she could have complications during or after surgery it is much less than the chances of her having problems because of not being spayed. She'll be fine :) you'll be fine :), and you'll have a much healthier, happier dog for a much longer time for having done this for her. It's normal for you to be nervous for your girl. Have confidence in your vet, thousands of dogs, and people have this surgery all the time with no complications. You're doing the right thing!|
