my young dog is throwing up even though i withheld food

A few days ago we started crating our little dachshund min-pin 1yr old dog due to him peeing and pooping on our sofa during the day  he started having diarrhea then today he vomitted a large amt of food that he had to have eaten yesterday because i withheld his food today what to do

Hi Dawn,

If your dog has been housetrained until now, you should have him examined by your vet. A sudden loss of bowel and bladder control can signal a medical problem.

If your dog is still throwing up,  is still having diarrhea, or just isn't acting like his normal self after his short fast, then you need to have him examined by your vet. Try to have him drink a little water, so he doesn't become dehydrated.

If your dog is NOT throwing up, and the diarrhea has slowed or stopped, then you can try a bland diet for about two days, before gradually switching back to your dog's regular food.

A bland diet is:
1/3 meat (which could be lean cooked hamburger, skinless chicken or turkey or jarred baby food)
2/3 cooked white rice or other bland grain, or cottage cheese
Feed is small amounts several times during the day, which equal the dog's normal amount of food.

If the vomiting or diarrhea starts again while your dog is on the bland diet, then it's time for a vet exam.
