leash habits

We adopted a two year old golden retriever.  He has lived in a home with working owners and no yard.  The only way he knows to go outside is on a leash.  We have a large backyard, however he will not go outside to empty his bowls without walking on a leash.  Do you have any suggestions to retrain this leash habit?  Thank you!

It might just take time for him to settle down,for a few days walk him out as you have been,but after about three days just put the leash on him,but don't hold it and just go outside with him,and let him drag the leash,with you being outside with him,you may have to do that for a few days or more,but don't give in,just keep taking him out then let go of the leash,then when he goes praise him and after doing that well,then try it with no leash at all
