Puppy with discharge from penis

We just got a 6-week old german shepherd and have noticed that a sometimes after he urinates there is a small drop of yellow-green pus on his penis. He does not seem to be straining to urinate or in any sort of pain. Is this normal? If not, is there anything we can do to keep it from getting worse- our vet is out of town until Saturday.

Hi Susan,

A small amount of yellowish-greenish pus is normal, it's the normal sloughing of cells and removal of accumulated debris. If it is more than a drop on the end of his penis, then he could have an infection, in which case you'd need to take your puppy to the vet.

A sign of a problem would be if your puppy was excessively licking his penis, seemed to be in pain, or acting lethargic.
