Question
QUESTION: I have a five year old sheltie we love him to death, and he returns the favor, recently i noticed he seems to be loosing his hair like shedding but twice as bad,any help would be greatly appreciated.

ANSWER: Hi John,

Because Shetland Sheepdogs are prone to develop thyroid problems, you should have your dog examined by your vet to rule out a medical problem.

Hypothyroidism can cause hair loss sometimes along with dry skin and excessive dandruff. A dog may have one symptom or may have a variety of symptoms which can include a slow heart rate, and intolerance to cold.

Best of luck,

QUESTION: Hello thank you very much,my dog does have a bad dandruff problem,But he is very active always running around the house ,jumping up and down very playfull

Answer
Hi John,

Your dog has at least two of the symptoms of Hypothyroidism. The first symptom that is usually seen is hair loss, which is usually not associated with other skin problems. It could be your dog is just starting to have symptoms. Early treatment is important. It can lead to full recovery and will provide your dog with a full and productive life-span.

If it is left untreated, lethargy will eventually be noticed,  your dog may experience a mental dullness, and his heart rate can slow.  If left untreated, it will affect your dogs quality of life. The symptoms with hypothyroidism are usually subtle at first. It is a gradual process which takes months to one year to develop.

Because the Sheltie breed is prone to develop this disorder, it should definitely be ruled out by your veterinarian NOW, in the early stages. Diagnosis of this disease is done by blood tests. It is a it is very treatable condition.

Best of luck,

Patti
