dog eating own feces

Question
We recently adopted a 5 year old English Pointer.  We have only heard her bark once in the two months that we've had her.  Does it seem strange that she doesn't bark at anything?  We look for other signs from her, such as circling the room, to let us know if she needs to go out,  but we don't see or hear anything.  Any tips on properly training her to let us know she has to go out?  We currently take her out after meals and in between, taking our time with her, but this doesn't always work.  Thanks, Lois

Answer
Some dogs just don't bark much.  Try hanging a bell on the door right at the lower corner where they often paw to get out.

Eating Feces?

The best solution to stool eating, coprophagy, is cleaning them up before the dog has a chance. You can try food additives, the home remedies pineapple juice or canned pumpkin or the commercial products Forbid or Deter.

Why dogs do it is poorly understood. It may be diet related, but changing the dog's diet might cause worse problems. Whatever problems it causes for the owner, it doesn't seem to hurt the dog unless you are trying to clear up a worm infestation.
