Question
I got question regarding my 5 year old bull mastiff/shephard mix of dog. We got her from foster home last week.she's excellent with kids and people but she attacks other dogs as soon she sees them. She goes as far as trying to get off her leash when I walk her in order to go after a dog.
I'm wondering if this can be corrected or not?

Answer
Hi Emina,

Your dog's aggressive behavior towards other dogs can be corrected. There are several reasons for your dog's aggression, but not being there to see these attack attempts, I can't tell you what specific methods to use to gain control over your dog.

Training a dog out of aggression is something best done by working with a trainer, or dog behaviorist. That way, you and your dog can be evaluated, and you will be taught the best methods of controlling your dog. Your vet or boarding kennel can probably refer you to a trainer. You can also find one in the yellow pages, or online:

Until you start training (and your dog shows progress) consider having your dog wear a muzzle when you take him out. A basket style muzzle is the most humane style. then at least, even if your dog escapes your hold, other pets and people will be safe.

Best of luck,

Patti
