Question
Hello, I have a 7 month old terrier mix breed male puppy. I have had him since he was 8 weeks old, he is fixed, he is also current on all vaccines and vet care, he is 30 lbs. I am trying to find a good dog food for him and am having a hard time. There are so many choices. I know you are not a vet or dog nutritionist but I wonder your views on the subject since you have dealt with dogs for such a long time. My budget is not very big and I dont know if its ok to buy so called "grocery" brands like puppy chow, kibbles n bits, and pedigree. In a perfect world I could feed my dog premium natural foods but after looking at the price, nearly $40 for only 15 pounds, I do not have that option due to money. I have been reading alot on the subject and have read so much about corn being a bad ingredient but it seems like all the grocery brands have corn in them. My questions are, by your experience, what have you fed your dogs? Do you think its true that corn is bad or the grocery dog foods are worse than more expensive ones? Thanks so much.

Answer
I feed my dogs Eagle Original, and have for over 25 years. Eagle Original contains corn, and corn is a good source of Omega 6 fatty acid and is 99% digestible if it has been processed properly. It is an excellent energy source.

Not all expensive foods are good, and most grocery store brands are not either. When feeding a quality premium food, a dog will generally eat less of that product, and in the end, it won't be as expensive as it appears. For example, a 30# dog would need about 1-1/4 cups of Eagle Original.

Look for a food that has meat (preferably meat meal) as its first ingredient, has a minimum of grains, and NO by-products.

Shop around more for dog food. $40 for 15# would be too rich for my blood, too. Unfortunately, when the price of gasoline (diesel) went up, so did the cost of everything that is hauled in to us by trucks. You're right; there are a million foods out there nowadays. I do recommend Eagle and Wellness.
