Dog food question

Question
We have an 8 month old labramut (some type of lab mix, but we're not sure what she's mixed with) who is a very picky eater.  We've found one brand of food she really loves (Bil Jac, I believe it's called) but the problem is that she will lick her lips and act as if she has food in her teeth for 10 minutes after eating.  We think it frustrates her, but it's really the only food we can set down and she will eat every time.  We've tried other foods but sometimes she'll go a day without eating them, no matter how hungry she is.

My question is, is this harmful to the dog (the lip licking)?  Should we just keep trying different dog foods until we find another she likes and doesn't cause the same symptoms?

Answer
I don't like your report on BilJac.  If food is sticking to her teeth, it could lead to bad breath, tatter, and decay.  She must have a lot of something else in her if she is a picky eater.  Most Labs will gulp down more than they need and look for more.  The most common cause of picky eating is overfeeding.  It usually is no trouble to get most dogs to eat all they need.

Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest.
You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them.  Each dog is
different.  Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog
must have its food adjusted to its individual needs. Here is a link to a good illustrated guide,

If your dog is overweight, I would go back to one of the prior chows and feed less of it.  it isn't good to keep switching chows.  The more different proteins a dog is exposed to when young, the harder it is to work around it if it ever develops a food allergy when it is older.
