Need help with dog choice

Question
QUESTION: Hi 1st i want to say thank you for offering your services.

We are thinking of getting a puppy and i just dont know which breed i want to go with.  We are a family of 5, live in a one story house in orlando, FL.  I have 3 boys who are 5, 3 & almost 2.  We want to get a medium sized dog that does not shed much but i dont need him to have super short hair.  I have an opportunity to get a 4w old Dachshund but from what i read they are not good with children.

A little about our family.  I am a stay at home mom, my oldest is in school and we're not really outdoors much so i dont think a dog that needs alot of exercise would be right for us.  We do have a big fenced in yard but we will not let the dog outside without us being out there with him.

Also we're not getting the dog to have the kids take care of him.  Its not a situation where they are begging us for a dog or anything, its our decision to get one.

I've been trying to research, i want to make sure i get a puppy thats right for our family.  We do want a puppy so that he grows with our family.  I would like one that is not too difficult to train.

Thank you for any info/advice you are able to give me.

ANSWER: My first choice would be a minature poodle,as they love kids, and are the easiest breed to train, while they do need brushing and regular grooming they don't shed-and are happy to go on long walks or just stay at home

My second choice would be a Staffordshire Bull terrier,is well known for loving kids and in England is called 'the Nannay dog' because it is famous for it's love of kids, also has a short low mantinence coat, and because of that is better as an indoor dog, also willing to learn

The third choice would be a minature or standard Schnauzer,as they are also known for being great with kids, easy to train, and low shedding, though like the poodle does need grooming

QUESTION: Thank you so much for the info.  I will look into those breeds further.

When you say that the miniature poodle & schnauzer needs grooming, would i be able to groom at home or would i need professional grooming and if professional how often would you say if we groomed often at home?

Thanks again.

Answer
While you could learn to groom your own dog,it really is better to just take it to a groomer,so yes professional grooming

And usually about every 6-12 weeks depending on if you brush the dog,and depending on how often you want it done, and how long you like it,before it becomes a hassle

but the average is about every 8 weeks
