introducing puppy to dog

Question
We will be adding a dachshund puppy to our family in 2 weeks. We currently have a 12-yr old doxie who is extremely good natured but has always received our sole attention (no kids either). She is currently visiting her "grandparents". Should we have them both here together from the start or should we have the puppy acclimate to our household before we bring the "oldest" back home. (They have already met at the breeder's and did just fine together).  Just trying to decide if we need to drive back ove to the 'grands to bring our dog back and if her being here would ease the transition of the puppy.  Thanks for your help.

Answer
I doubt it makes much difference.  We inflicted 6 new puppies on Aster between 10 and 15 years old.  Some of them we introduced when we picked her up at the dog sitters.  Some at home.  She hated them all.

Once past 3 years old, many dogs don't want anything to do with puppies, their sharp little teeth, and their biting games.  You need to teach the puppy to leave the older dog alone.  As soon as the puppy starts to focus on the older dog, give it a sharp ''Ah, ah, ah!'' and offer it a chew toy.
