My dog seems to be holding his pee and poo

Question
Hi. I have a miniature schnauzer named smokey. He is a male and approximately one year old. I just gotten him for a few days. The previous owners told me that he is potty trained. But so far he has not done it in the house on the papers. He only pees and poo when I bring him for a walk. I suspect he is holding his pee for marking purposes as he only pees via marking during his walks. The thing is I can only take him out once daily and I have heard that holding in pee and poo is detrimental to his health. I live in a apartment so I cannot leave him outside to allow him to go as and when he likes. What should I do? Is it okay for him to hold his pee and poo till the next walk? Appreciate your help.

Answer
Eliminating only once a day is not healthy at all, particularly in a breed that can be prone to bladder/urinary problems. A dog should be able to go outside *at least* three times a day.

A dog that is housebroken will NOT eliminate on newspapers in the house; he needs to be able to go outside to potty. Some dogs do not want to eliminate in their own yard, so they need to be encourage to potty, and praised when they do go there. If yours will only go when he is walked, then you need to walk him.... at least three times a day. It doesn't need to be a long walk... just a short one to allow him time to potty. If you cannot do this, then you need to pay someone else to take him out, or place him in a new home or return him to his previous owners.
