My dog is eating cat litter

I have a 6 month old Toy Chi.  We are trying to litter box train him. However, he doesn't like the puppy litter that we purchased from a local pet supply store.  We are wondering if cat litter would be an option?  And if so, do you recommend a special brand?  I heard that clay litter may cause bowel a bowel obstruction if ingested, which would be a fear of ours.

If you are interested in trying a different litter, try Yesterday's News. Its a recycled litter for dogs, cats and ferrets that is made out of newspaper. Yes, clay litter can lead to an obstruction, stay away from all clay or clumping litters. Another possible option would be feline pine.
