Dog has scabs and sores

Question
My dog has had fleas this summer, and developed flaky, dark scabs and pink sores on her belly and on the inside of her hind legs. She has a topical flea treatment on her back. Although I haven't seen any fleas for a week or so, I want to give her a flea bath with de flea shampoo and use a medicated shampoo and ointment for her skin. Is it ok to use the two shampoos in the same week/bath, with the spot-on flea treatment on her as well?

Answer
Hi Maria,

Thank you for writing to me about your dog's skin problems.

Giving your dog a flea bath on top of the topical flea treatment would be "overkill" and dangerous for your dog's immune system.  To prevent fleas include a product in your dog's food called Missing Link (J-B Wholesale Pet Supply).  Given on a regular basis, this will prevent fleas from being attracted to your dog.

For fleas in the home, simply vacuum every day, disgard the bag if there are fleas in it and then wash the floors and rugs with generous amounts of 20 mule team borax dissolved in hot water in a bucket.  You can also use this mixture to spray furniture.

These are natural ways to control and prevent the flea population and to keep your dog safe.

What your dog probably needs now is an organic oatmeal bath which is soothing and a daily capsule of fish oil.  This will keep her skin and coat healthy.

Best Regards,
Shelley Davis
