dog bad behavior humping

Question
I am taking care of a friend's 8 year old Boston Terrier for an extended period of time. He seems to hump everything.  Other dogs. People, inanimate things and it is starting to become very bothersome.  How can I stop him?

Answer

Hi Deanns,

When the dog starts the humping behavior, clap your hands loudly to startle him, then immediately firmly tell the dog "NO!". The minute the dog stops the unwanted behavior, give him a small treat, and praise.

Irritation or itching in the genital area can cause a male dog to hump in response to the physical sensation. Be alert to this possibility, and of course have your veterinarian prescribe treatment to correct any underlying condition.

Best of luck,

Patti
