Question
QUESTION: i first want to say that I WILL take my dog to the vet, i am not hinging that decision on your reply. i would really appreciate some in-put on this matter. that said we have a farm %26 a multitude of animals including 1 raccoon{ this maybe important} i take care of most "vet" work myself. 1 of my dogs a 11yr dalmatian born here is gagging &  dry heaving about 27 hrs now not decongestant but enough to have me worried{ my husband is laid off  so if i can treat this at home great if not, well off to the vet we go!! what ive read online is bone meal can be a cause of this hes been eating alot of the chicken scratch lately i pick up the bowl when were in the barn but the dogs eat what kicked on the ground, the thing is they all do it {3 others, mother, sister & 1 JR terrier ] none of them are doing this.  all the dalmatians do a wheezing kind of breathing that sounds like kennel cough we had the vet check them yrs ago its not. this is not the sme. when he went for a ride twice today it stopped which makes it seem like an allergy but just to pop up this fast is odd. also his temp is fine 101.3 eating & drinking are fine really eating a little more than usual, he had urinary stones removed 6 or 7 yrs ago & is      on perscrition u/d dog food so  we know how much he eats. the reason i mentioned the raccoon is i know they carry alot of diseases she is indoor -outdoor but she NEVER laeves the yard yet  shes only just at 1yr %26 ive raised %26 released  at least 1 a yr for the past 6 or 7 yrs weve never had this happen although i realise it could still contribute. i gave Floyd 1 benadril tab. this afternoon it seemed to help but i cant be sure since its not been that long%26 he was outside with my husband %26 that couldve been what helped. sorry to be so long-winded im new at this but want to tell you that whether you can/ or will help me i REALLY APPRECIATE that you are doing this!! thank you

ANSWER: I don't like the fact that is going on this long...Give him 4 tablespoons of mineral oil to see if that helps.  There is a chance he has eaten something else that is stuck somewhere...I am not sure how you would tell this without an Xray.  The gagging is suspicious.  Is he eating and throwing up? or not eating at all?   There can be a problem with dogs ingesting sand when they do it for a long time....It is not digestible and can get lodged in the stomach and intestines...In the future teach your dogs the command "leave it".   This will solve the eating of stuff from the ground.
If the mineral oil doesn't work by tomorrow, then you will have to go to the vet.  Mineral oil is great for this kind of stuff.  I have had it break up blockages.

QUESTION: Nancy sorry i didn't get you all the facts i was worried about being too long-winded.i did give him olive oil not mineral, didn't have any, also he is not throwing up, just some white frothy fluid occasionally. he is eating fine. we did see him try to eat a paper towel that i tossed on the ground while cleaning a wound on my horse this was tonight after i e-mailed you, but he could,Ave gotten one before we clean it every night and don't pick up until we are done, in that case the paper towel would've had Betadine scrub on it plus any bacteria that we are scrubbing out{ the horses are all current on ALL shots %26 worming. I know its late and I'm so sorry if you have time to let me know if you think the mineral oil would be better than olive id like to know, if we can we want to be able to take him to the vet on Mon. so its not an emergency call, although we WILL take him even this minute if we need to. the other thing that makes me think we are ok with not taking I'm to the vet ASAP is why it seems to stop when hes out of the house. a couple other things are I'm sorry about how late this is { I'm a night-owl} and the other causes I've looked at on-line don't seem to apply,i:e bloat, tracheal collapse, etc. once again thank you very much for your time.

Answer
It was bloat that I was worried about,,,mineral oil is much better than olive oil.. since it also has laxative qualities to it...   Has he been pooping ok?   If he is not coughing it is probably not the tracheal collapse...get the  mineral oil in him and see how he is tomorrow.  He may still have to go to the vet, but if he poops really well,  you should be ok.. The other problem is his lungs...does he seem to be wheezing?
Well teach him "leave it"  by putting a treat on the floor and telling him the command then when he does it, even for a second, he gets a treat from your hand, not the one on the floor,,, (however pick that one up)  and repeat this til they get the idea...Then when he is by the chicken scratch you can say "leave it"
