Question
We are looking at getting a puppy or a older dog 6 months or older. As far as vet cost and time training a puppy, which one would be better for small children? We have grandchildren who comes to visit us from time to time who lives out of state.
Thanks!

Answer
Hello, Thanks for emailing and I am sorry it took so long for me to get back to you.

It is up to you a smaller puppy requires cnstant supervision or it will chew soething it shouldn't or pee smewhere it shouldn't a very young puppy 2/5 months cant be left to wonder around the home or it will get into truble...olderpups are more reliable for husetraining but in the case of larger breeds are not half way through growing up yet and are still prone to chewing on things. A older pup may or may not have been housetrained or had any training started with a freshly weaned puppy(7/8 weeks of age) you are getting a fresh start with every sort of training including basic commands and housetraining...an older puppy may have have a few bad habits that have t be worked on that a younger puppy hasn't yet developed such as jumping on people or knocking over the trash can ect ect. A puppy of any age will delight most all kids and most puppies will jump on teasing kids and big pups can nock small kids over...its u to the owner t train a puppy not to jump and how to act around ids/other dogs/strangers and other pets. A puppy needs 3 to 4 parvo/distemper shots in its first year and one rabies shot plus a few dewormings several weeks apart which takes tie and money...you pay for the Vaccine + checkup every single time you go in..... all goodreeders will send the puppy home with after having its first parvo/distemper shot and deworming. The oldest puppy I bought was my first and se was 3 months at the time I found her breeder...she was underweight and very dopey for a lab puppy I blame it on the being kept in a dark dingey basement in a tiny pen with her brothers and sisters not even allowed to see there mother and being fed a cheap no-name dog food and Not enough of it at that her ribs were showing....my experiance with her at that age was god she was back to being a normal puppy after being on a different kibble and fed more and I had no truble training her and as a plus a little bit older of a puppy does Not need to go out and pee so often.
