Question
I have a 3 month old female American bulldog.  She urinated on the floor tonight and I noticed what looked like blood.  She has continued to pee several times over the next few hours.  It's almost like she has a bladder infection.  She doesn't seem to be in any pain or anything.  She just keeps needing to pee.  Do you have suggestions?  Should I take her to the vet or give her cranberry pills or something?

Answer
Hi Christy,

You are correct, your dog probably has a bladder, or urinary tract infection (UTI). These are common in female dogs, but it does need treatment. UTIs are uncomfortable and can make urinating a painful ordeal. Dogs are pretty stoic about showing pain, so if you aren't seeing any outward signs of discomfort, that doesn't mean your dog isn't in pain. If you've ever had a bladder infection, you'd know what your dog is feeling.

It's important to take your dog for walks when ever it is necessary, even if you have to ask someone else to do it. This way she will be more comfortable and can get rid of the bacteria in the bladder that could cause problems.

You should have your dog promptly examined by your veterinarian. UTIs can usually be treated very effectively with antibiotics. If left untreated, they can get worse, sometimes very quickly. The infection can ascend into the kidneys, lining of the heart and other organs.

Best of luck,
Patti
