Question
Hi! I just got a 4 year old pit bull red nose, what should I feed him??? how many times???

Answer
Congratulations on your new Pit Bull!

At his age, you can feed him once or twice a day.  I personally prefer twice, but, not all dogs want to eat twice a day.

As for how much to feed, that will depend upon several things.  First, the food you choose to feed as different foods do have different caloric density.  It will also depend upon your dog's metabolism and activity level.  Once you have chosen a food, follow the feeding guidelines on the package, keeping in mind that you will typically end up feeding less than is recommended.  You will likely have to adjust the feeding amounts according to your dog's specific needs.

If your Pit Bull does not have any existing conditions, you have a wide variety of foods to choose from.  I will list some in order according to my preference:  Orijen, Evo, Timberwolf, Nature's Variety Instinct, Innova, Fromm Four Star, Taste of the Wild.

Based upon a dog's needs, I like to see a higher protein, grain free food fed.

If you are inclined, and even better for your dog, is a home prepared diet, cooked or raw.

Pit Bulls do commonly have allergies and skin issues, so a high quality diet is essential in keeping their immune systems strong.  It would also be wise to add a good quality salmon oil to the diet.

Good luck and if you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Sincerely,
Gail E. Vigneault
