Question
Hi,

My 2yr old Olde tyme bulldog has always had a bit of a sensitive stomach and i seem to spend so much time searching for food for him that doesn't have any additives or preservatives that in turn won't break the bank. The food that he's on at the moment is a dry meal from Skinners that has no add's or supp's but his stools look like the food has literally gone in one end and out the other but just got a bit soggy in the middle, my vet always wants me to change to Hills Science plan but it costs twice what i'm currently paying. If this were the only option then i would happily get this food and break the bank in order to keep my boy happy and healthy but there must be another option that wouldn't break the bank, jeez i'd be spending the same amount on his food per month as i do on my own. Please could you suggest anything?

Answer
Are you certain that the additives are a problem?  Much of what is ''known'' about dog chow isn't true.  How is his weight?  I have always kept my dogs lean, but overweight is common and leads to all sorts of problems including some say loose stools.  Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs. Each dog is different.  Is the Science your vet is suggesting one of their prescription diets, or just the regular Science available elsewhere at a much lower cost?  You could try Pro Plan for sensitive stomachs or if you have a Costco, many claim their Kirkland is a great chow for the price.

Most of my dogs have done fine on the first of the common brands that I gave them.  Many other people report going through brand after brand like you have,  before finding one that works.  Unfortunately, there is no pattern at all.  There are plenty of people that found their dog did best on one of the common brands with all its additives and unappetising ingredients.
