Question
I have an 8 month old rat terrier who used to be a completely indoor dog but now spends all day outdoors and only sleeps indoors. He has had all of his vaccines, including his de-worming ones. Last night i discovered that he still has worms. They are white/pinkish, very small and still moving around when they leave his anus. Is there another shot he needs to get? Is this normal?

Answer
Nancy -

If you are seeing them, they are very likely to be tapeworms as the other kinds are very very small.  Tapeworms are not killed by the normal wormings given puppies.

You should take a stool sample to your vet to confirm the kind and get the right medicine.  A tapeworm can be especially dangerous to a dog as small as a rat terrier.

Please make sure your little fella has proper shelter and plenty of fresh water if he's spending days outside. This breed is not really well suited to being outside dogs.

Enjoy your little fella !
