Adopted Rescue Age

Question
I just adopted a shih tzu or shih tzu mix from the humane society on October 12th.  I was told she was about 2 yrs and I thought that maybe she had a litter of puppies since she had pronounced nipples.  But I also felt that she was very small for a two year old.  She only weighed 8 lbs.
She was picked up as a stray so I have absolutely no information on her.  My personal vet saw her yesterday and when he looked at her teeth they were very small in back and looked like they were just coming in  He said in his opinion she was only 5 1/2 months!  When I asked him about the size of her nipples he said that would happen at her first heat.
I really am confused.  When does a shih tzu go into their first heat?  I trust him but needed another opinion.  Isn't she too young to have had her first heat?  And when are they fully grown?  I guess time will tell puppy or adult!
Thanks for any of your help.

Answer
Hi Patricia,  Well, Thank You for adopting a rescue dog!! ************ good for you ************
This dog may come into Season from 6 months to 12 months of age.
Most of the time little dogs come into season after 9 months of age.
It all depends on genetics.

Sorry, I can't help from here.  You're right, give it some time and you will know.  Or, get a 3rd Vet's opinion.

Wish I could be of more help......
Good luck ladies!
