Question
Dear Keisha,
I have just recently bought a 7 week old toy poodle puppy, Maddie. She is now 8 weeks old. When i first got her she was the sweetest thing and only after a week she has turned into a monster. My guy friends started playing rough with her by rolling her around and dragging their hands across the floor; therefore, making her chase them. She is still sweet at times but when she is really hyper and playful she will growl very aggressively and bite at my feet and hands, and pull on my clothing. She also has this stuffed bear that she plays and growls at very roughly. I know she is just 8 weeks old and this may very well be playful behavior, but i'm so afraid of this turning into aggression as she gets older. I've tried shaking a can full of pennies at her and this did not work, i have slapped her nose and told her "no, bad girl" and this does not work either. Please give me some advice on stopping this. Thank you very much!

Answer
Well it could have been that the puppy was improperly socialized as she did not spend the time with her mother that she should have.  Puppies should never leave their breeders until 8 weeks old.  Also your friends that are playing rough with her like this are encouraging this behavior.  You need to make them stop this as soon as you can.  When she bites at you and growls tell her NO firmly and walk away from her.  When she is sweet with you like you want her to be praise her higly.  You shouldnt slap her nose if anything you should tap her under the chin.  You can also try using a spray bottle when she misbehaves.  I would also let her know that it is ok to do this with her toy but NOT with you.  So when she does this behavior with you then redirect her to her toy and let her take it out on her toy.
