Poodle behaviour

Question
We have two miniature poodles who are both 1 year of age. They both sleep inside on our beds.  Recently we had a night where we stayed overnight and were not home untile lunch the next day.  The poodles had access in and out of the house, I left the T.V on for comfort and a night light, access to beds etc accessible for them to be comforted while we were away.  When we came home everything seemed okay but noticed over the next couple of days one of the poodles acting quite anxious, not leaving my sight, urinated once inside and acting out strange twitching motions where he would continuously nip into the air as if he was trying to catch invisible insects. Is this the fact that we left him and he has separation anxiety and how can we prepare him again if we have to spent a night away.  My husband and I both work so they are used to being left during the day for periods but this was the first time we had left them since getting them overnight.

Answer
Hello Wayne,
When you leave your dogs alone, be sure that they are in a secure location such as a large crate or small bathroom.  This keeps them in one small area, but at the same time gives them some room.  Put out some potty pads so they can go on them if they need to.  Provide a couple of toys, or things to chew on that is safe for them (such as a hard bone or something like a Dentibone)  You can also sleep in a tee shirt for a couple of days to get your scent on it, then give it to your dogs.  It will have your smell on it and might make them more relaxed.

I don't have an explanation as to what happened with the one dog, but I know that by keeping them in a small area, there is a smaller chance that something could go wrong.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
