Poodle Epilespy

Question
I have been told it is "normal" for a poodle to have an epileptic between the ages of 1 year and 6 years old.  Is this true?

Answer
Hello Anna,
Actually, I have also heard that its normal for Poodles to have seizures from both breeders and Vets.  I wouldn't consider seizures to be normal for any being, human or animal, but I guess its not uncommon for Poodles to have seizures (for no apparent reason) as long as they are no more frequent than every 6 months or so.  I have a Silver boy who tends to have a seizure every 6 months or so, and he has been tested and there is no cause for his seizures.
There are other reasons for dogs to have seizures, such as Dibetic or blood sugar issues, overweight conditions can bring it on, and medical conditions.
I would think that genetic issues would contribute to dogs having seizures on a "regular" basis like my dog.

** As a tip, when my dog has a seizure, I make sure he is on the floor so that he doesn't fall from the bed or couch, I talk to him so that he knows I am there with him, I try to get a blanket or towel under him because he sometimes loses his bowels or bladder, and I find that saying a quick Prayer for him helps him come out of it quicker.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me about this, or other Poodle questions in general, please feel free to ask.
