Question
i have an 5 year old lab male who was given to me at the age of 3 he was abused and is very passive.the other day my wife got me a new puppy a 8 week old choc lab he also is a male. ok now the problem  my 5 year old keeps urinating in the house on select items. he has never done this before. i want to be strict with him but knowing his past im a bit leary.  how long will this continue?  should i have the 5 year old neutered? was getting a new puppy a mistake?

Answer
Most dogs are not pleased at having a new dog come to live in the house.  I am surprised the way mine seem to be able to tell the difference between a visit and moving in.  The 5 year old likely is too old to enjoy the puppy biting games most dogs enjoy until about the age  of 3.  However, you older dog needs to get over it.  Part of the problem may be your relationship with him.
Having a good pack structure reduces such problems.  The dogs see all the
people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in
the pack and a top dog.  Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members
outrank the 4 legged ones.  You can learn to play the role of top dog by
reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class
or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with
a treat. Start at http://www.dogsbestfriend.com/  Neutering him would be a good step too.  It is no cure all, but a big help in these cases.  It also reduces the chances of cancer later in life.

He may have been more tolerant of a female, but 2 males are far less likely to be a problem than 2 females.

Our 12 year old Aster is not thrilled with our 12 week old Nita.
